Welcome!
The Friends of the Limberlost work to preserve the legacy of Gene Stratton-Porter by supporting efforts to ensure that the Limberlost State Historic Site remains a viable educational and historical resource, and by supporting the restoration of wetlands in the Limberlost Territories.
At a time when most women stayed home as housewives, Gene explored the Limberlost swamp and its natural wonders. As well as running the household and raising her daughter, she took and processed her own photographs and wrote nature studies, magazine articles and many widely read novels.
When Gene Stratton-Porter came to live here, the Limberlost Swamp was still an extensive wilderness, even a bit scary. However, efforts to drain the swamp for agricultural use, logging for lumber and natural gas exploration were already starting. In our time only small separate areas are left.
