Friends,

We have received many calls and emails regarding the recently passed federal health care legislation. I too am greatly concerned about the ramifications of this legislation to both our state and our nation, and appreciate hearing from you on this important issue.
While I believe that some responsible health care reform is needed, I do not support a government takeover and I certainly don’t support the President’s willingness to push our nation deeper into debt. As a state legislator, I did not have the opportunity to vote against this bill, however, I am thankful that our US Congressman Mike Pence represented our district well in Congress by taking a strong stand against this health care bill.
Indiana’s Attorney General, Greg Zoeller, is currently looking at the state’s options in regards to filing a lawsuit based on the unconstitutionality of the health care bill. Attorney General Zoeller issued a press release after the passage of the health care bill that can be viewed at the following website: http://www.in.gov/portal/news_events/52670.htm.
Additionally, the Governor has publicly shared his disappointment in the passage of the health care bill. He stated that not only will Medicaid costs to the State of Indiana increase dramatically, but the Healthy Indiana Plan (HIP) would be eliminated as the new federal rules would force the 45,000 families who are currently covered by HIP onto the Medicaid rolls. The governor’s release discussing the health care bill and the burden it will have on Hoosiers can be found at the following website: http://www.in.gov/portal/news_events/52671.htm.
During the recently adjourned Indiana General Assembly, 6 different resolutions (SCR 10, SJR 14, HJR 6, HJR 6, HR 9 and HCR 28) were introduced that would have protected our state’s sovereignty and given us the right to opt out of any federal health care provisions. Unfortunately, those provisions stalled when House Speaker Pat Bauer refused to allow any of these resolutions a hearing. I am disappointed that we were not allowed the opportunity to vote on this matter.
I will be paying close attention to the continued discussions on the health care bill and its ramifications to Hoosiers. Please don’t hesitate to contact me with any additional questions or concerns.

Sincerely,
Bill Davis
